The goal of the Hypothermia Program is to prevent any hypothermia deaths during the winter months. The Hypothermia Program was operated from December 1, 2006 through April 2, 2007 at 22 different churches. The Hypothermia Program is open to any single man or woman who needs shelter. St. Alban’s volunteers, both adults and the youth, assisted Annandale United Methodist Church by serving food to homeless clients and staffing the church during a one-week period. This year, St. Alban’s once again has been asked to come forward to assist with the hypothermia program. The program is structured differently this year. Instead of having most of the work done at a host church, FACETS* will have a static shelter in which it will house and feed most of the homeless clients. St. Alban’s has been asked to partner during the week of February 17 by assisting St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church (just outside of the beltway on Little River toward Fairfax) in assisting at the static shelter. We have been asked to take two days during the week and do the following: · Prepare dinner for clients at the static shelter · Transport the food to the static shelter · Serve the clients dinner · Converse with the clients · Clean up after dinner · Transport any “overflow” clients to St. Matthews · Prepare bag breakfasts and lunches for the client We have signed up for two days (exact days to be determined) during the week of the 17th. We will need the parish’s support for this wonderful outreach activity. For all those interested in volunteering, we will have sign up sheets in the narthex sometime in January. In addition, there will be an organizational meeting in February before the 17th to get ready for the program. Please come forward to assist for a night or two in order to prevent hypothermia in our community.
