Shepherd’s Center of Annandale-Springfield (SCAS)

What programs and services does SCAS offer to members and others in its area?  It began by offering Lunch N’ Life events on a bi-monthly basis.  It now provides the following programs and services:

I.          Lunch N’ Life events arranges bi-monthly luncheon events with speakers and entertainment groups, usually at local places of worship, and publicizes these events to seniors in the area

II.          Adventures in Learning offers college-type programs on a variety of subjects to continue the life-long learning process.  Most instructors are older adults.  Courses have included:

a.         Basic Computer Training Classes to teach older adults computer skills to enable them to         access the internet, use e-mail, and other personal computer programs.

b.         History

c.         Genealogy

d.         Comparative religion

III.         Information/Referral provides information through the Shepherd’s Center office (and eventually a web site) on the programs and services that SCAS supports and is planning

IV.        Flu Shots provides sites where seniors can obtain flu shots annually within Annandale-Springfield and adjacent areas, such as  at supporting area churches

V.        Recreation (aka Trips and Outings) arranges various recreation events and day trips

VII.       Volunteer opportunities.  There are a number of new and potential jobs for volunteers who can spend an hour to a day per week wither at home or in the SCAS office.

What has St. Alban’s done for the SCAS?  We have hosted one Lunch N’ Life event in 2006 and 2007, both of which were very successful.  Also, we have publicized other Lunch N’ Life events and the Adventures in Learning classes that SCAS has conducted in the past year.  For example, Rev. Grayce O’Neill of St. Alban’s was one of the “professors” in the Comparative Religion course, and her explanation of the Episcopal denomination’ origins and teachings were acclaimed by the SCAS staff and students.
