This support consists of case management by professional case managers, mental health support by a staff of mental health therapists, substance abuse counseling by professional substance abuse counselors, medical help from a nurse practitioner and a R.N. twice a week, adult life-skills education, housing and job search support. Because of its strong mental health team, Bailey’s has attracted many homeless people with chronic mental health illness. Other shelters and institutions in the area frequently refer clients to the shelter. Bailey’s has also traditionally opened its door to physically disabled homeless people, and therefore has attracted a large number of disabled residents. During the cold weather, Bailey’s accommodates ten additional people on a night-by-night basis and throughout the year. Bailey’s operates a drop-in program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., during which time any homeless person can go to the shelter, take a shower, have lunch and receive support from the professional staff if desired. The shelter also provides an aftercare program in which former residents receive the support of a mental health therapist and a case managers after leaving the shelter. The primary goal of Bailey’s is to provide support to the homeless; that support may take the form of a bed, food, the opportunity to take a shower, or counseling by the professional staff. One of Bailey’s major achievements is that the shelter has provided that support to thousands of its brothers and sisters over the years.
