Requests can be submitted by e-mail by contacting Doug Heffner at dheffner@hunton.com, by contacting him by phone (703-934-2989), leaving a request in the committee’s box in the Narthex (lobby), or by attending an Outreach meeting. If time is short, we will deliberate by e-mail; otherwise, the opportunity will be considered at the next meeting, on the third Thursday of the month.

We encourage you to help our whole parish know of the many, many opportunities to share corporately in Outreach.

 

St. Alban’s Outreach Committee’s Charge and Criteria for Selecting Activities

According to the parish’s by-laws, the Outreach Committee is to identify and organize activities to: 

  • Extend St. Alban’s ministry to the world.
  • Bring the world to the church.
  • Participate in organizations that boldly proclaim the Christian faith in word and action.

 We do so in support of St. Alban’s Mission Statement: “St. Alban’s is called to be a vibrant, Christ-centered community witnessing God’s love for all people through worship, education, stewardship, outreach and pastoral care.”

 After careful consideration of both the multiplicity of opportunities for mission, witness, and service, as well as the resources that the parish has to address those opportunities, we sat down to determine the criteria for selecting which activities to support. This was a difficult exercise, since such decisions of necessity reflect value judgments. We approached our task prayerfully and with respect for each member’s viewpoints. The criteria that we selected are: 

  • Vested interest by congregation with different types of commitment (e.g., volunteer time, financial support, prayers) consistent with the parish’s mission statement.
  • Discernment with flexibility of choice.
  • Diversified and balanced geographic coverage with large amount going to community – balanced by not spreading too thinly.
  • Consideration for the organizations that have depended on us in the past.
  • Organizations that agree to provide reporting/information upon request as needed.
  • Organizations that can be expected to use resources wisely.
